Costs
The Canon E470 printer is one of the most affordable printers in the market. It is designed for no-frills home or small office users who just want basic printing, scanning and copying functions. The printer just costs less than RM200 in Malaysia (although the printer is Made in Thailand) and it comes with a black and a color ink cartridges. For most users who just want to print black/white documents, the ink can lasts about 400 pages. The cost of the black ink (PG-47) is about RM40 so that works out to be RM0.10 per page.
Connectivity
The Canon E470 printer offers both USB and Wi-Fi printing, but most users will likely prefer Wi-Fi. Connecting via USB would be inconvenient given today’s prevalence of laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Setting up the WiFi for the first time can be confusing as the user need to press a combination of buttons in difference sequences for Direct WiFi and Network WiFi. The WiFi connection can be slow sometimes, maybe because it is using Wireless N standard (2.4 GHz).
Performance
The overall performance for the Canon E470 printer can be quite slow. From power on of the printer, it takes sometime to start up and connect to the WiFi router. Then sending the print job from the smartphone to the printer will take about 10-20 secs and after that the printer needs to warm up the ink head (up to 1 min) before it can start printing. For a typical monochrome document printing, it takes about 10 secs.
Quality
The print quality on the Canon E470 is acceptable for monochrome and color. It supports high resolution printing and produces vibrant colors on photo paper. The ink for this printer dries quickly too. The printer does not support duplex printing so if you need to print on both pages, you need to reload the paper manually.
My Recommendation
The Canon E470 printer is the most affordable all-in-one printer for no-frills home or small office users in my opinion. There are several trade-offs in terms of performance or inconvenience but thinking about the price and the running costs it may well be worth it. It has all the basic necessary features of a printer – print, scan, copy and with wireless connectivity – to get the jobs done.
